Jan Aiello grew up in South Carolina and lived in the DC area for 20 years. After 14 years of teaching art she devoted herself to making art full time. In 2017, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where she worked and exhibited for 8 years. She recently located back to Arlington, Virginia with her family. Jan works as a full-time artist in mixed media and painting in at Studios@307 in Falls Church, VA.
The natural world offers us cues to the experience of being human. Flora and fauna mirror the life cycle of the human body and consciousness. Through movement, pattern, pause, disruption, or organisms we can’t always see, we connect the environment to our inner selves and our spirituality and the interdependent whole.
Artists Hilma of Klimt, Luchita Hurtado, Kiki Smith, and Louise Bourgeoise are some of the artists who inspire me to make a connection between nature and what it means to be human. My experience as a mother and Breast Cancer survivor calls me to delicate forms in nature and how like us, they gather, suffer, thrive, and regenerate.
